Here's a photo album of all of Kaare's and Sophie's brothers and sisters, aunt's and uncles, friends and cousins. This site maintained by our playful puppies  proud parent's pet people .

In particular, follow this link when including Sophie and Kaare were wee tiny.  They're getting large enough to guess which ones are Kaare and Sophie by the 3rd and 4th pages :

Origin and Meaning of Kaare and Sophie

They're Norwegian Buhunds after all, so we tried to think of good Norwegian names for them.  Kind'a tough since neither of us know any Norwegian.  After much thought (and this weirdness), we came up with these two names:

Kaare

Kaare - is most actually spelled Kåre in Norwegian. However, it's hard to type the little circle above the a, and you certainly can't get those little dog tag machines at PetCo to inscribe it.  So like the old timers at Ellis Island, we decided to spell it it Kaare.  (To type this letter, hold down the Alt key and while holding it down, type in  0229 on the number key. When you lift up the alt key, you'll get å)å is the last letter in the Danish/Norwegian alphabet and sounds like the vowel in 'fall' and 'more'.

Originally, we just picked Kaare because we liked the way it sounded.  However,  two different references I found  Link: Link: indicated that Kåre is a common nickname for Curly.  Assume that we picked the name because we were thinking about Kaare's tail.  However, all Buhunds have an inner coat of tightly corkskew like curly hair (that seem to shed 4 times a year!), so either interpretation fits.   (Of course, we may of been thinking of one of the  Stooges!)

According to this link, Kåre has been the third most popular names in Norway in the past 100 years, with nearly 1 in 50 people boys named that.  (According to this link however, it doesn't seem to currently be as popular.)

I did have one link that mentioned that Kaare meant 'like the wind', can't remember where however.

Kåre's name day is 22nd September.

Sophie

Sophie appears to be even more Greek than Norwegian, but we know how far those Greeks traveled in ancient times.  Sophie as we spell it is apparently a French spelling variant of Sofie.   Link: Sofie is currently the 13'th most popular girls name in Norway in the year 2006, and the most popular girls name in Denmark.

Link: Link:  Greek, meaning: Wisdom, or Lover of Wisdom.

In Denmak, Sophie's name day is 15th May, while in Norway, Sofie's name day is 29th November.
